Based on the research from PISA, Indonesian students have low level of reading achievement. They are on level 72 from 76 country (2018). If reading and writing has a tight connection, it means that Indonesian people also have a low writing interest.
There are many benefits of writing:
It can help to memorize the material. By writing, we also read the content that will stay keep in our mind.
It can gain the creativity. We can write of what we think. We put them in a paper, and see...written language is longer than spoken language.
It can increase the capability of writing. If we keep on learning continously, surely we can be better in writing.
It can be a self healing. Some people can get calmness, feeling peace, loose the the sadness by writing.
However, sometimes we find students are feeling lazy. Perhaps they are feeling tired, bored or in bad mood. That’s why, we need to vary the writing activity. Writing is not only on a booknote but also can use other media. Writing is not only a hobby but it can be trained. Anyone can write, even though it is just a status of your social media.
Talking about writing is not only about idea but also the style of writing. As we get use to write, our writing will have a good look.
Anyway, here are some ideas to make our writing more fun that i compile from most of my classwork. Check it out!
1. Make a wall magazines. In making wall magz, we collaborate with other students to make it attractive. We can share ideas of writing among the students and we can combine with pictures or art paper. First, we decide the topic and let them broaden their mind into many kinds of writing, a story, funfact, poem, flash news and many more.
2. Make a poster. This is almost similar with wall magazine but it can be displayed in smaller size. It doesn’t need much words either. Students who loves drawing may like this project.
3. Make pop up note. This we should prepare picture, paper, glue and scissors. Students of lower grade may love this. They are doing art and gain writing activities too.
4. Make book mark. If students are lazy to open the notebook, give them a piece of art-paper to write on. Let them to write such kind of review, a quotes or any short writing. Let them to decorate as they want.
5. Make a flash card. To explain something, we can use flash card. We just prepare art paper and picture. Let them describe the picture at the back.
6. Make a postcard letter. For more content, especially narrative text, we can use postcard. If the topic is about personal experience, we can create a story which written on it.
7. An Antology Book project. This project is especially for the upper grade which they are able to arrange the sentences properly. Antology is similar to a compilation. Many students start to write, compile it, print it out and “publish” it.
Writing is as essential as reading. Writing is one of way to train our mind, skill and soul. However, writing can be conducted in fun way. The first point is being fun so they can enjoy writing.
